Mechanical Maintenance Techniques: Gearboxes and Gearing Mechanisms

This unit develops an understanding of the function, operation and routine maintenance requirements associated with gearboxes and gearing mechanisms. It is recommended that An Introduction to Mechanical Maintenance: Transmission Systems and Components is completed before undertaking this unit and that Mechanical Maintenance Practice: Gearboxes and Gearing Mechanisms is completed in conjunction with this Unit.

Learning Objectives :

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Outline the function and operation of gearboxes and gearing mechanisms.
  • Outline typical signs of fault, damage, wear and corrosion in gearboxes and gearing mechanisms.
  • Describe typical routine maintenance requirements of gearboxes and gearing mechanisms.
  • Equipment – gearboxes and gearing mechanisms.
  • Routine maintenance techniques for gearboxes and gearing mechanisms.
  • Technical information and guidelines.

Teaching methods :

  • The course will be delivered by means of classroom lectures and practical workshop exercices.
  • Written questions could be supported by oral questions using equipment in the workshop – for example, identifying and naming faults or damage on a piece of equipment and/or describe the sequence of dismantling a piece of equipment.
  • Assessments can also be combined with other units where relevant, for example, Mechanical Maintenance Practice: Gearboxes and Gearing Mechanisms.
  • Pre & post course tests are performed to measure knowledge acquisition.
