Mechanical Maintenance Techniques: Centrifugal Pumps, Reciprocating Pumps and Valves

This unit develops an understanding of the function, operation and routine maintenance requirements associated with centrifugal pumps, reciprocating pumps and valves. It is recommended that An Introduction to Mechanical Maintenance: Distribution Systems is completed before undertaking this unit and that Mechanical Maintenance Practice: Centrifugal Pumps, Reciprocating Pumps and Valves is completed in conjunction with this Unit.

Learning Objectives :

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Outline the function and operation of centrifugal pumps, reciprocating pumps and valves.
  • Outline typical signs of fault, damage, wear and corrosion in centrifugal pumps, reciprocating pumps and valves.
  • Describe typical routine maintenance requirements of centrifugal pumps, reciprocating pumps and valves.
  • Equipment – centrifugal pumps, reciprocating pumps and valves.
  • Routine maintenance techniques for centrifugal pumps, reciprocating pumps and valves.
  • Technical information and guidelines.

Teaching methods :

  • The course will be delivered by means of classroom lectures and practical workshop exercices.
  • Written questions could be supported by oral questions using equipment in the workshop – for example, identifying and naming faults or damage on a piece of equipment and/or describe the sequence of dismantling a piece of equipment.
  • Assessments can also be combined with other units where relevant, for example, Maintenance Practice: Centrifugal Pumps, Reciprocating Pumps and Valves.
  • Pre & post course tests are performed to measure knowledge acquisition.
