Mechanical Maintenance Practice: Diesel Engines

This unit develops the skills required to carry out routine maintenance of diesel engines in a training workshop, including preparation for maintenance activities, identification of hazards, using technical guidelines, preparing maintenance records and clearing the work area. It is recommended that Mechanical Maintenance Techniques: Diesel Engines is completed before or in conjunction with this Unit.

Learning Objectives : 

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to: 

  • Prepare to carry out routine maintenance on diesel engines.
  • Carry out routine maintenance on diesel engines.
  • Complete routine maintenance for diesel engines.
  • Routine maintenance techniques for diesel engines.
  • Routine maintenance procedures and workshop practice.
  • Safe working procedures/practices.

 

Teaching methods :

  • The course will be delivered by means of classroom lectures and practical workshop exercices. 
  • Observations must be used to assess learners as they perform the maintenance tasks. Observations must be carried by competent Assessors and recorded on an observation checklist. Safe working should always form part of the observation checklists.
  • Learners must be observed working on an individual basis for a minimum of 50% of the maintenance tasks.
  • Assessments can also be combined with other units where relevant – this could include the following:
    • Mechanical Maintenance Techniques: Diesel Engines.
    • Health and Safety in Oil and Gas Maintenance Workshops.
    • Maintenance Working Practices.
  • Pre & post course tests are performed to measure knowledge acquisition.
