Electrical Maintenance Techniques: Single Phase and Three-Phase AC Motors

This unit develops an understanding of the function, operation and routine maintenance requirements associated with single phase and three phase ac motors. It is recommended that An Introduction to Electrical Maintenance: Rotating Equipment and Tools is completed before undertaking this Unit and that Electrical Maintenance Practice: Single Phase and Three-Phase AC Motors is completed in conjunction with this Unit.

Learning Objectives :

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Outline the function and operation of single phase and threephase AC motors.
  • Outline typical signs of fault, damage, wear and corrosion in single phase and three-phase AC motors.
  • Describe typical routine maintenance requirements of single phase and three-phase AC motors.
  • Equipment – single phase and three-phase AC motors.
  • Routine maintenance techniques for single phase and three-phase AC motors.
  • Technical information and guidelines.

Teaching methods :

  • The course will be delivered by means of classroom lectures and practical workshop exercices.
  • Written questions could be supported by oral questions using equipment in the workshop – for example, identifying and naming faults or damage on a piece of equipment and/or describe the sequence of dismantling a piece of equipment.
  • Assessments can also be combined with other units where relevant, for example, Electrical Maintenance Practice: Single Phase and Three-Phase AC Motors.
  • Pre & post course tests are performed to measure knowledge acquisition.
